Have you ever wondered what's inside the muffler on you vehicle, and just how restrictive it is? We have, so we found out. The results are interesting.

Miata exhaust:

The complete exhaust two mufflers: a small resonator and a larger canister.
The resonator is a standard glass pack.
The large canister has a number of chambers inside.
Note the holes circled in red. All of the exhaust must pass through a total of six 10mm holes. There are five holes in the panel on the right (four visible) and one on the next panel on the left that can be seen in another photo.
The tube circled in yellow is lined up directly in front of one of these holes. This is probably fine tuning the exhaust note. The chamber on the left (inlet) side of the cannister is probably for the same thing since no exhaust appears to pass through it.

944 turbo exhaust:

This exhaust has one muffler.
This muffler is a glass pack with two chambers.
The first chamber is conventional. The second chamber appears at first glance to be much larger.
Upon further examination, we discover that the second chamber actually contains two layers. There is an inner perforated tube with another perforated layer surrounding it. There is no packing material between them. There was packing material around the outer as can be seen above.
