Stainless SE-R exhaust

This is another dedicated Street Mod autocross car with an SR-20VE engine swap. The owner of this car hadseen the other SE-R exhaust from Chase Race and wanted one for himself.

Unlike the other SE-R exhaust, this one is made from 304 Stainless. We decided on Magnaflow mufflersfor this project since this owner wanted a low restriction exhaust that was still reasonably quiet. Since Magnaflow didn't have an appropraitely sized resonator available we used a Summit part for this.

To follow the construction of this exhaust, read below. Click on the pictures to view the slide show.
First step, get the car up in the air. You can see the old HKS exhaust here. Since we couldn't find flanges with the correct bolt spacing and tubing size for this project they had to be made... After the flanges were cut the holes were drilled. You can see the progression from pilot holes to correct size holes. After the holes were drilled the corners were rounded.

Since this is primarily a race car, the owner wanted a test pipe he could install at the event... After it was cut to length, the flanges were welded on. The flanges are clocked at a strange angle to imitate the angles of the factory exhaust. With that done, it was time to weld a flange to the resonator and put it in place. The test pipe was used to mock up the exhaust because the catalytic converter on this car had one rotating flange. The exhaust needed to be held rigid while it was assembled.

Now it's time to work on the non-straight part of the exhaust. Start with a 180° mandrel bend... ...and make it into two 90° mandrel bends. Add a piece of straight pipe in between them and this is starting to look like an exhaust system. No, the car is not being held up by the jack stand under the exhaust system...

Now that we know this fits properly we'll polish it before welding it into place. It's a lot easier to polish a 2' piece of material than it is to polish a 6' piece. Polishing makes a stunning difference. Add a couple more bends and a pair of flanges... The back half is now complete. All of the individual pieces were polished before welding them together. Now the welds need to be polished.

The back half with the welds polished. Getting ready for paint Another angle on the completed exhaust. Here is the exhaust installed on the car with the catalytic converter back where it belongs.

Another shot of the exhaust underneath the car. Here's where the exhaust goes up and over the rear suspension. The finished product viewed from the outside.
